Lisa Wang & Zory McGrath

From the broad energetic strokes of en plein air painting in idyllic Paris, to the strict discipline of the mystical art of Russian Orthodox Iconography, art@wintergarden presents the art of Lisa Wang and Zory McGrath.

Painting in completely different fields both Lisa and Zory represent female artists at the height of their practice, each striving for excellence through constant practice and dedication to their work. With sound education and knowledge both artists also have long-standing teaching careers and a strong following of students.

From Lisa we will see her recent paintings in oils and watercolour across a spectrum of subjects including portraits and landscapes. Enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Victorian coast and countryside along with paintings recently completed from travels to Europe and China. Her work evokes the atmospheric conditions of each, applying the paint in the vibrant opaque colours of oils and the translucent fluid washes of watercolour each work considered in its own right.

The writing of icons requires specific canonical rules, composition and colour, in order to recreate the image correctly. From Zory we see the depth of knowledge and understanding she brings to her icons. Included: ‘The Seven Days of Creation’ a contemporary icon, ‘Mary Magdalene’ and ‘Christ Pantocrator’ an icon fragment are just some of her works. Lovingly prepared surfaces, richly layered pigments and delicately applied gold leaf come together in her luscious frescos. Zory invites us to consider both the spiritual and visual essence of her works.

The exhibition runs from November 3 - December 3.

Official opening Sunday afternoon November 5 from 4pm with guest speaker Joseph Zbukvick.
