'Knowing and Belonging'

“Many migrant journeys are relatable but also diverse. The resemblance is in what we leave behind and how we struggle to begin anew. The variation is how we carry on our lives based on ‘the known’. Everyone chooses how and where to ‘belong’. It is a thread that we weave through our ‘memories’ and ‘the knowing’ of where we have come from, that assists us in making a new beginning”.

Mirijana Margetic

A collection of recent paintings, drawings and sculptures by Mirjana Margetic, on exhibition at art@wintergarden Geelong until Sunday 1 December, explores the wider issues of knowing and belonging, voicing perceptions of migration and insights on the migration journey. Margetic examines the development of one's identity in the context of multicultural space and seeing through the prism of personal sensibility.

Mirjana Margetic’s artwork explores areas of identity and the ways it is perceived and reflected through art. Her current exhibition ‘Knowing and Belonging’ focuses on externalising her inner vision on the theme of migration as it also reflects other people’s experiences of migration. In this collection of work Margetic explores the visual form of the body as a language of emotions ranging from joy to sadness, gain and loss. Her attention to the painterly surface is rich and varied using a luscious palette to convey the human experience, which is so close to her heart.

The exhibition was inspired by a book she has recently produced titled The Serbian Migration to Victoria: What Shapes my Identity Today?. Published by the Serbian Community Association of Australia Inc. the book explores ideas of belonging and cultural heritage. It contains twenty stories told by Serbian people who migrated to Victoria from the 1940’s up until the present day, as well as stories from their descendants of whom some were born in Victoria. Many had a desire to unravel moments of their past and the journeys that they experienced and treasured. The deeper feelings emerge from these stories and they are a catalyst for Margetic’s recent artwork. The stories from the book are woven throughout her artwork, forming this exhibition; however, they could be representative of anyone’s journey.
