Entries in the Zonta Club of Geelong International Women’s Day Art Exhibition 2012 will be displayed at the Geelong Wintergarden, art@wintergarden gallery from Friday 2nd March. Caz Paton, Manager of Arts and Culture City of Greater Geelong, will officially open the art show between 6:30pm and 8:30pm at the Friday night soiree, this year commemorating International Women’s Day with the theme ‘Women – The Spirit’.
Zonta Club of Geelong President Christine Denmead said, “This is our fifth annual art show which is becoming increasingly popular. It has become a ‘must exhibit’ on the calendar for artists”.
Artists can interpret the theme through any medium they chose. Past entries have included paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, pottery and jewellery. The exhibition offers an enormous variety giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy this display of regional talent, always insightful, stimulating and clever.
The announcement of judging for the respected Jan Mitchell Memorial Award, 2012 of $1,000 and an Encouragement Award are an anticipated highlight of the opening event. The People’s Choice Award will be announced at the Zonta Club of Geelong’s March Awards Night at Dromoland House on Wednesday 7th March so voting for your favorite art work is an integral part of visiting the exhibition.
Zonta International has been on the front lines of global and local efforts to help women overcome the barriers to equal education, health care, legal rights, credit and employment through education, service and advocacy programs. During 2011 the Zonta Club of Geelong provided 1,000 birthing kits to women in Afghanistan, supported local young single mothers re-entering or remaining in the education system, awarded scholarships to local young women to aid in their tertiary studies, assisted with the ‘Geelong says NO to Violence Against Women’ campaign, and provided breast care cushions for local cancer patients.
