”Masters in the Making”

Junior artists making it big in the art world

Junior artists from around Geelong have been busy creating artistic masterpieces in preparation for Masters in the Making, a special exhibition focusing on the work of young artists aged 5 – 18 years enrolled in art schools in the Geelong region. The exhibition, opening on Saturday 9th June at art@wintergarden, will be an opportunity for budding artists to showcase their talent in a professional gallery.

But, in an exciting first, the artworks by talented kids will not only be on display at the real life exhibition in Geelong, they will also be uploaded to a virtual exhibition on Bluebird Foundation’s facebook page. Here, the public will be able to view the artworks and nominate their favourite for the coveted People’s Choice award. To encourage clicks, one lucky voter will win a brand new Nokia mobile phone with a six month Endless service from Transact.

Masters in the Making acknowledges the importance of the inspiration and guidance provided by teachers and encourages kids to reach for the stars, with prizes being offered in six categories, including the People’s Choice award. Renowned visual artist, Viktor Cebergs, and guest celebrity judge, Sarah Carroll, will be faced with the difficult task of awarding the prizes. But the kids already feel like winners. “My Mum says I’m probably going to be a famous artist one day”, commented Jake, 9, excited by the prospect of exhibiting in a professional gallery.

Behind the project is Bluebird Foundation, a Geelong based not-for-profit dedicated to making quality Arts programs accessible for all. “Everyone is very excited to see the exhibition evolve to include an online component,” commented Bluebird Foundation’s Bron Lawson. “The kids can’t wait to share their work with family and friends from all over Australia and the world.”

Masters in the Making has been supported by the City of Greater Geelong, Barry Plant Real Estate, Coles, Transact and the Lions Club of Geelong. The real life exhibition will be on view at art@wintergarden from Friday 9th June until Saturday 30th June while the virtual exhibition will be found at www.facebook.com/BluebirdFoundationInc. Voting for the People’s Choice award will be open at the gallery and online throughout this time.
