On Weaving

An exhibition of new works by Mirjana Margetic.

"Traditionally, domestic handicrafts have been associated with women and opposed to what was considered ‘high’ art. Historically known as craft, culturally understood, the domain of women; or knowledge and responsibility of women, it was attesting to the notion of feminine beauty and the sense of the women’s identity. Do women’s domestic handcrafts have importance and meanings? Can it live as a beautiful and powerful narrative, presented in a heroic contemporary setting? Do they hold any great power?"

On weaving, this month's art@wintergarden exhibition, explores a rich variety of recycled materials and found objects, merging the dualities of craft and abstraction, domestic and high art, the traditional, and the contemporary, through painting and mixed media. Artworks travel to the source: doilies, handkerchiefs, rags and tablecloths; from knitting to tapestry and weaving; embodying domestic fabrics with a countless of the cultural connections and identities. This work is not only about the skill of women art makers but also about the very act of being attentive to detail, form and colour.

Mirjana Margetic’s artwork collects, wonders, and questions the definition of art. It seeks to reveal women as creative subject, to give them a serious presence in the world of contemporary art as a testament to the dedication of many female makers. Mirjana Margetic’s artwork is a tribute to richness, variety, and significant underlying concepts of female artists who have concisely utilised domestic handcrafts. This will be Mirjana’s sixth major exhibition and her third solo with art@wintergarden since she started exhibiting her work back in 2010.
